Our 3 Go-To Decking Materials

Updated: Jun 13, 2022

Summer time is here in New Castle County, Delaware! If you're looking for more ways to enjoy the outdoors this season, a custom deck can be a fantastic option. Decks are a great way to extend your living space, increase your home's appeal, and entertain guests. Without further ado, here is more information on our top three go-to decking materials.

1. Pressure-Treated Wood

Pressure-treated wood is one of the most commonly used material for deck-building. It is lumber treated with chemicals which help protect against decay, insects, mold, and water damage. It is an affordable decking material, however, it requires some maintenance to keep it looking great. This includes pressure-washing, sanding, and staining every so often.

2. Composite Decking

Composite decking material is made from wood fibers encased in plastic. This makes it quite resistant to insects, water damage, and decay without any sanding or staining. Most composite decking resembles real wood, with the wood-grain texture adding grip to the treks. While composite decking is pricier than pressure-treated wood upfront, it does not require much upkeep beyond sweeping and washing a couple times a year, thus making it less costly over time.

3. PVC Decking

PVC decking is made entirely out of polyvinyl chloride, or plastic. This means it has virtually none of the issues associated with natural wood such as decaying, mildew, and insect damage. PVC is a harder material than composite, making it more resistant to normal wear and tear. If you walk around barefoot, PVC is a great choice since it stays cooler in the heat and sun. Due to its strength and resilience, PVC decking costs more per square foot than pressure-treated wood or composite.

Which decking material should I choose?

When choosing the material for your outdoor deck you should consider price, maintenance, and aesthetics. Pressure-treated wood, composite, and PVC decking materials are all great choices, it just depends on what works best with your lifestyle.
